LARKING HISTORICAL GRAPHIC DESIGN

This ever-evolving project was inspired by the beach ABCs project. "Larking" is an abbreviation taken from the word "mudlarking" which refers to the act of looking along riverbanks, mudflats, or shorelines for historical artifacts, typically done at low-tide on the Thames in London.

My version of larking (or beach combing) is to visit a former landfill (dated 1920-1940's) that borders a beach area. I've been lucky to find bottles to ID and through research, have been able to pair with original advertisements, as well as fragments of typography that was stamped on ceramic or embossed into glass.

This has become a wonderful teaching vehicle for my Graphic Design classes.

Students enjoy the tactile nature of the packaging and the context of how they were advertised. They often turn to a collection I've assembled in my office as inspiration for contemporary design projects.

I've also been able to bring in multiple copies of the same bottle which I've repurposed for a label design assignment.

The short video on this page illustrates the various containers, typographic and logos and brand related items I've found over the length

of this project.
